We've noticed that unless people think to include their own name in their PCP title, there is no reference to them on their page. We'd like to add the variable of the PCP owner name to the PCP page, near the title. Any suggestions as to how we can find and add the right variable to a custom template?

I think you will have to use combination of hook and custom template. So use hook to assign owner name to template and then use that value in custom template.
