dropping support for php4 and mysql4 completely?

Lobo, when assisting me with a troubleshooting question, mentioned CiviCRM would be dropping php4 support.

...we are dropping support for php4 completely after the next release (v1.8), so now is a good time to upgrade your php version

Before going there, please do a survey of your current CiviCRM devotees. See how many can and cannot use php5?

I requested my web host, ThinkHost, who is one of the best commercial web host's at accommodating their customers  and a major supporter of Open Source packages, and this was their reply...

PHP5 has some issues in terms of backwards compatibility and we do not
wish to inconvenience many clients whose applications may cease working
through us upgrading at this point.

Also, it is very difficult to get php5 and php4 to run next to each
other; which was possible during the php3/php4 transition period. Our
System Administrator has attempted this, but was unsuccessful.

We are working on these issues and will upgrade to PHP5 as soon as it's
viable. Our System Administrator will also further investigate the
possibility of running the two side-by-side; but I couldn't give you
a guarantee when either would occur.

If the plan is to drop php4 support, I would suggest you place a note on the CiviCRM Download page so those who cannot access php5 are forewarned.

Ashford:

I changed the subject to also include mysql4.

Yes, its a difficult decision, but something we need to do to keep moving forward and make further progress. We had a discussion on the development list a few months ago. Here is the link to the blog entry: http://civicrm.org/node/174

We have one more release ( 1.8 ) with php4 support. We will also support 1.8 for a longer period than normal with critical bug and security fixes. At that point we'll put a notice on the SF.net download page.

On the good news an increasing number of our downloads are php5.

Just to add support for php5 going forward. My host currently runs php4. I'm happy to drop them and move forward with another if they can't step upto the mark. There's a whole load of added functionality in CiviCRM on php5 that makes it worthwhile to make the move.

They should get a better administrator, then. Somehow tons of other hosts manage to do this reliably.
