"Add new contacts to a group" not working
July 03, 2010, 04:56:17 pm
According to http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/How+to+Create+Profiles I should be able to automatically assign contacts added using the selected profile to a certain group.

I only have one profile listed in my "CiviCRM » Administer CiviCRM » CiviCRM Profile" that is used for User Registration and User Account, so presumably that is the profile that is used for adding contacts.  However when I select "Create New Individual" from the dropdown on the left (or from the Contacts > New Individual menu item) the new user is not added to the group I've specified via the profile's advanced settings.  In fact, the individual's Groups tab says "Groups (0)".

How do I ensure that that profile is, in fact, being used for adding contacts?

Create New Individual is not a profile.

If you add your contacts using profile they will be added to particular group etc. Use profile create mode to add contacts.

Yes this helps, but only partially.

I created a new joomla menu item for my site front-end, specifying my desired profile as the one to be used for adding new contacts.  This works exactly as promised, i.e. the new contact is also added to the default group I have specified.   (It turns out that the URL for this is  not anything like "civicrm/profile/create?gid=1&reset=1" but rather "index.php?option=com_civicrm&view=Profiles&Itemid=239" even though the id for this profile, per  CiviCRM  » Administer CiviCRM, is equal to '1' ... more on that later.)

So, in order to ensure that new individuals are added via a profile rather than via the "Contact > New Individual" menu item, I tried the following:
a) observe that the URL for the default "New Individual" menu item is "civicrm/contact/add&reset=1&ct=Individual"
b) created a new menu item whose URL is civicrm/profile/create?gid=1&reset=1 (I tried gid=1 because that's the id shown on CiviCRM  » Administer CiviCRM for this profile
c) got a "Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred. Could not find valid value for gid." message
d) back to step b, except specified gid=239 (since that was the itemid from the Joomla front-end)
e) same "Sorry" message.

So, clearly, neither '1' nor '239' is the right GID.  How do I go about determining the right GID value to plug in?

Also... I see that profiles are a way to specify what columns appear in query outputs.

Is there a way to specify what columns appear in civicrm/contact/search or civicrm/contact/search/advanced query outputs?  If not, is there a way to "pipe" these query outputs through a profile to specify the desired output columns?
