I'm removing duplicates using the merge contacts function. Often in one of the columns I get entries like this: {contact.individual_prefix}{ } {contact.first_name}{ }{contact.middle_name}{ }{contact.last_name}{ }{contact.individual_suffix}. Most of the time I simply get plain text. Why is that?

That's the value of postal greeting / email greeting / addressee, it is used for token replacement.

The other part of the answer could be that one of your contacts was added prior to 3.x (or whenever the new 'greeting tokens' were brought in - and the other contact was created afterwards - hence the 'merge' option is finding a difference and reporting it to you.

Got it! Thanks. And since only a subset of my database would get the tokens anyway if I was careful to retain them in the merges, I'm not bothering. I'm figuring either there will be a global way to introduce these tokens later or it won't be a problem that some contacts don't have them.
