In merging duplicate contacts, in one of the two columns displayed, I see a plain phone number; in the other I see the phone number with a drop down box with options "Home," "Billing," and "Work" and a box that says "add now." Explanation, please? Thanks!

Plain phone number with location type if present indicates current value which you can change using select during merging. Using "add now" you can choose to add new phone so that you don't overwrite existing phone for the contact.
