Order Labels By Postal Code instead of Alphabetical

How much effort would it take to add a 'Sort By Postal Code Instead of Alphabetical Name' option checkbox on the Print Mailing Labels screen?

Odd, my memory was that any Sort that you do on the Results screen will pass through to the labels. BUt I see that isn't happening. Maybe some of the new features for labels re 'shared addresses' etc has caused this to go - or maybe it is just Failing Memory Syndrome on my part.

Agreed Peter, my hope was that by sorting the results before printing labels, the sort would persist, but this is not the case.  This is the first time I've tried this, so I don't have any memory to fall back on.  ;)

1. Search -> Find Contacts, just clicked Search to get all hundred plus contacts in demo DB
2. Clicked Postal Code column top of search results to sort by Postal code
3. Selected 'all' on page 1
4. action -> Mailing Labels

--- pdf has addresses sorted ascending by postal code (first 20-ish don't have addresses, then remaining do sort)

One potential issue is that you can't do more than one (browser) page of search results at a time - so ultimately mail merge might be your best option.

But it didn't work for me just now on Demo when I sorted by postcode then selected all on Page 1.

Interesting.  A regression bug?  ...Or a deliberate change to disable this functionality?  Time to file a issue in the tracker?

Doesn't work for me on 3.2 either - in fact can't deduce what sort pattern it's using when I sort the search results by postal code and use the Mailing Labels task :-( Would be great if you can debug this a bit and file an issue ideally w/ a patch.

One thing I'll note is that PDF isalphabetical by last name regardless of what the user has chosen to sort by in the result page.  This is consistent on a group of 2000+ results on my 3.1.5 site.

By the way, I have asked others in the past but have not gotten an answer yet.  What is the procedure or format for submitting a "patch"?  Where are the docs on the proper way to submit a patch?  To whom or what is the patch submitted?  I have never submitted a patch.
