Import simply does not work
October 30, 2007, 06:29:33 am
I'm at my wits end. I've searched through the forums for the last 2 days now, and can't find a solution that works.

In Firefox, the importing function doesn't go past Step 3, and simply reverts back to the login screen, with no records imported.
In IE, it stops at Step 3, and goes back to the Preview step. When you try to continue, it goes back again. After trying 3-4 times, it also reverts back to the Joomla login screen.

I have tried importing a simple database, of 10-20 records, with no luck as well.

Can anyone please guide me in solving this?

First debugging step is to try to import it on the demo.
(either sanitize your data or put it into a group on import so you can delete all your contacts from the public server)

Second is to think about your source file. Mac/PC? Any line return problem? Encoding issues? Foreign characters? I usually fiddle a little (save as excel, then save as csv; or open your csv in a text editor, change one character and then save it again)

Then, since you have only 10-20 records, I'd import them one record at a time. That will probably show you which line is causing your problems.

And probably the best way is to look at error logs, but that is beyond my depth of knowledge.

I have the same issue with 1.9 in Joomla on a WAMP server.

Having found that the data I'm trying to import works with 1.8 in Joomla (or with 1.9 in Drupal) I am now engaged again in looking at the functionality of the system.   :)

However because (as it says) 'I'm new here' I did try the Joomla demo site to see if I could uncover anything else that might help identify the issue.  Now I need help with the Joomla demo !

It opens with a few components of CiviCRM in the menus, but nothing I could navigate from to the Import Contacts page.  I tried using  'option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/dashboard&reset=1' suffix of the demo URL but got denied access to the page.

Can anyone help with this.

Thanks

This is a bug in CiviCRM v1.9.

I have filed issue: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-2375

This will be fixed in next revision release..

I am experiencing similar trouble on Drupal 5.3 CiviCRM 1.9 - new install.

I see the issue tracking has this marked as resolved.  Presumably the fix covers both Joomla and Drupal.  In the Drupal case the import appears to complete successfully on clicking done, but no records are entered.

No that was a joomla specific issue. can u reproduce your issue on demo since it is running v1.9 on drupal 5.3

you might also want to check your apache error logs

I am using V1.9 on Joomla and I am still unable to get past step 3 in the import process.  Is there something I am missing that was posted as a fix over the past week or so?  I have been looking all over the net for a fix but I have the latest versions of both apps.

I'm pretty sure that the fix for import in Joomla was included only in the very latest distribution of 1.9 - which was made available today (Nov 29) on SourceForge - version is 1.9.12432. Have you tried that version?

This issue is still a problem. I've made the appropriate comments on issue CRM-2375.

yes. and if it still does not work, you might want to try upgrading to 2.0. please check the the docs site (http://docs.civicrm.org/) for instructions on how to upgrade

I am having heaps of troubles with importing non-english characters into the latest Drupal/CiviCRM 2.0 - as well as any smart quotes and long hyphens - not fun!

I have a Filemaker database table saved as excel and then saved from Mac Excel 2008 as csv.

Your best bet is to "desensitize" a few of the problematic rows and then recreate the problem on the 2.0 Drupal demo site. Assuming it recreates, post a bug report to the issue tracker w/ the .csv file attached and exact steps to replicate the issue (also include a screenshot of the column mapping screen (step 2) with the issue report).
