Standalone CiviCRM Status?
October 30, 2007, 07:59:48 am
If I understand this right, CiviCRM currently requires Joomla or Drupal, but a standalone version is under "intensive" development.  How can we find out more about the standalone version and who is working on it?

We are currently using a custom build email management system and I have been looking at phplist for email management.  However, what we really need is a member management open source application with extensive targeting for email management.

It there any point in downloading the Joomla or Drupal versions and trying to strip their integration out?

After rethinking this, member management is also only part.  www.HealthCareForAllColorado.org is a Single-Payer Universal Health Care advocacy group.  We do have members, but also have a list of people that just wish to be kept informed.  We are moving from information to action and thus may need to do things like get all the nurses in a certain zip code that have indicated a willingness to visit a certain  political candidate.

phplist does not seem to do enough on the management side and SugarCRM might be too much.

Ideas - thanks.

If you have a dedicated or VPS server with PHP 5 & MySQL, Drupal is so quick & easy to install, there's no reason not to do that. You can always set CiviCRM as your 'home' page under Administration>Site Configuration>Site Information.

You'll already have drupal in place if you ever want feature from it, or you can basically ignore it if you want.

...and to actually answer your question, Civi Stand-alone was worked on by Code for Change this summer. I don't know how stable it is. I never heard a lot of confidence about it's actual use, which is why I recommmend just doing a barebones Drupal install.

Thanks - I'll try the Drupal route - wouldn't hurt to test it out anyway.

I heartily endorse the new CiviCRM installer. Thanks Lobo!

As a low-technical-skill user, my installs failed more often than not. Got it done in 10 minutes with the installer!

mchapman2000 - I do appreciate your perspective now.  No matter what we think about having to install drupal or the 2 mb of space that it takes, the space and effort is minor compared to what is involved to install CiviCRM.
