Useability question re User Record button
July 16, 2010, 03:13:43 am
Hi - i see the 'user record' and 'dashboard' buttons have been merged in to the 'actions' button.

while i see the value of taking a more consistent approach I also wonder if we are losing some features unnecessarily.

It seems to me that between the 'edit' and 'actions' buttons at one end, and the 'delete' button at the other (which might also be deemed an 'action') there is plenty of space to still have the 'dashboard' and 'user contact' buttons.

It is the 'user record' button I am particulary going in to bat for, since this is an item that we don't even know if someone has until we click on 'activity' - it has been a hugely useful queue for us, having this visible on the screen, so that at a glance we can tell if a contact has a Drupal account.

Any chance of getting it back ;-)

I'd like to weigh in and add my 3 grams to this!

I agree with @peterd - this is not an 'action' but a matter of ontology (it's a state of 'being')

Im loathe to add a button to the top for this as it seems that you all are thinking of it more as information ("this contact has a user record") than as an action ("i'd like to visit this contact's user record").

What about putting a button to user record in the summary tab?

Putting the "User record" button on the summary tab sounds like a good option.

Other suggestion:  Could the first column under "Edit" allow someone to record any action for the contact. It seems limiting to only offer 4 possible actions in this column.  Also "Create PDF Letter" would be a valuable addition.

Is there a hook for this screen so people can add their own choices to this area?

i agree with kyle on not adding more buttons to the top.

i think we should make it extensible and templatizable (at a very small level of granularity), so folks an add their own buttons and actions as needed. I suspect different folks will have different needs and want different actions exposed

You can definitely customize / add items to the "Actions" button by customizing Summary.tpl (the elements are built there as a list).

Regarding the User Record link, after some further conversations w/ Peter, Kyle and Kurund we arrived at a plan that seems to meet everyone's needs. User Record stays in Actions button, no new buttons. However, if contact is a user - we'll add their user id and a link to their user record to the data in the Summary tab.

David,

This is an ontologically sound proposal ;-)

Dave - would be great if it could expose the username too ;-) - makes it much easier for then eg adding a user to an OG without having to do an extra step

Peter - Maybe you or Eileen could submit that as a patch for 3.2.1. The username is not currently available to the tpl and is not retrieved by the php file which loads data for the Summary pane.

You'll need to add a call to the Drupal api which allows you to derive username from userid to CRM/Contact/Page/View.php around line 186 and assign that to the template. Then modify Summary.tpl to show it if present.
