I think having "today" as the default for the birthdate datepicker isn't too useful, but I'm not sure what an appropriate default would be. Average age according to http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/GCTTable?_bm=y&-geo_id=01000US&-_box_head_nbr=GCT-T2-R&-ds_name=PEP_2009_EST&-format=U-40Sa is 36.

Or have a configuration setting, e.g. if your site caters mostly to seniors or teens.

Thoughts?

The default is blank, but the datepicker has to display some kind of calendar when it pops up, so it ends up picking today when it's blank.

Not a high priority thing, just wondering if anyone has any ideas since obviously "today" is never the right date, and because the year scrollbox involves multiple finger movements to scroll back, I was thinking setting it to an earlier year might at least have the correct year be already visible in the range that the scrollbox initially displays, so it would cut down on scrolling.

But I guess that would cause the field value to initially display 1970/1/1 or whatever, which yes is probably not right - you'd have to clear the field if you didn't want to enter a date. The widget would need to function differently to interpret blank as something other than today.

Yea we generally hate the date picker it's clugey and we have people picking the wrong year about 20% of the time.  For example we have people picking 2011 for their birthday.

Anything done to allow the old style to come back would be much appreciated,
