I'm evaluating CiviCRM for use by a community theatre. The theatre has various membership types, with different amounts, which CiviCRM seems to support well. Additionally, they need to store the number of tickets to each performance the member is allowed to have. I see where I can add a custom field to the membership, but the theatre would have to add the value to each membership. I'd like the number of tickets to function like the amount and automatically populate. Is this possible?

Yes but requires some custom coding using a "hook".... which would populate that field automatically when the membership record is created based on the membership type.
