A number of organisations we work with have asked why the Groups a contact is in are not displayed on the contact Summary page (as Tags are).
These organisations don't use the Groups Tab as they want to keep the number of Tabs used to a minimum.

To see what Groups a contact is currently in they are having to go into Contact Edit to view the Group list.

Could Groups be displayed on the Contact Summary page?

You can use hook_civicrm_summary to put additional content on contact summary page - refer to http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/CiviCRM+hook+specification for more details.
