Chooses pay later...but then wants paypal
August 01, 2010, 08:29:17 pm
We have run into a scenario with several users who click "pay later" when completing a CiviContribute or CiviEvent flow, but then (a few minutes or a few days later) decide that they want to pay with PayPal (which would have been the default option had they not picked pay later in the first place).

How can we easily direct them to pay by Paypal (standard) at that point?

Is there some token or URL we can provide the users to re-engage with their flow and be directed to Paypal?

I'm curious how others have handled this situation.

Thanks,

Aaron

No there is not, other than

1. cancelling their pending contribution
2. emailing them and telling them their original contribution has been cancelled
3. encouraging them to use the form again, this time selecting paypal

Be prepared for the fact that 10%-20% of your donors are going to have issues using a webform to make a donation and complain, even if your form is as simple as can be.  people are weird.  This is just the way it is, i've been in the business for 12 years now, sorry.

I also recommend you change the default text from "I will pay later" to something more descriptive.  I often use "Rather than pay by credit card now, I will complete this form, click submit, and mail you a check tomorrow".  This let's them know exactly what they are expected to do.  "later" is very vague.

Actually - I think you'll find that since they created the waitlist system you can 're-enter' a pending event registration. You need to put the participant id into the URL - I can't find how it looks right now but you can generate them by testing the URL sent out by the waitlist system when someone is offered a place.

If people go to this URL they can create a second contribution against the same registration - you do still need to clean out the half complete contribution though.

There have been some changes in 3.2 to the data which might make this easier to improve because people who change their minds about how to pay soak up a lot of admin time

Just found the URL

civicrm/event/confirm?reset=1&cc=fail&participantId=

Note that the cc=fail (credit card =fail) will only affect 3.2 installs & will change the message that appears to specify that the credit card transaction failed

Eileen - a very, very late thank you...my apologies.
We've just used this now and the URL worked great!
