I've done several installs for groups in my area, but have come up with one that I'm hoping folks can point me in the right direction....

I'm going to meet with the folks from the local Literacy Council - they want a way to:

1) Sign up volunteer tutors

2) Sign up kids that need help

3) Set up one on one's and also small classes

I was thinking about setting up two different types of contacts and using CiviCase for the one-on-ones and CiviEvent for the small classes - but I'm just worried that there's a better / easier way. Any pointers?

You might want to check out the CiviSchool module that lobo and some folks from several schools have been developing. It includes functionality for scheduling parent-teacher conferences, as well as for scheduling and tracking attendance in after school programs. Although your requirements are a bit different (in semantics) - it seems like there's a decent amount of overlap in workflows and data model.
