Study Groups: Should I use Profiles or CiviEvents?
August 05, 2010, 03:28:34 pm
I am very new to CiviCRM, and I appreciate if you can direct me into the right way.

Some members of my organization organize their own study groups, and some of them manage more than one group.  I'd like to give my members access to update their study group information and be shown on a "Study Group Directory" without registration capabilities.  So for my situation, can I relied on Profile?  And because some of my members have more than one study group, should I create the same "fields" over and over again?  Or should I use CiviEvents?

Thank you.

It sounds to me like CiviEvents is the way to go, in my opinion.  You can give your study group leaders a login account (if you are using Drupal) and the permission to create and edit events.

You can then have a page which lists all the upcoming events.

In this fashion, the study group leaders can do the work of listing and scheduling the events.
Try CiviTeacher: the online video tutorial CiviCRM learning library.

I would consider using Groups as well. It depends on what study-group related functionality is needed (other than a directory of who's in what groups). Do study groups have regularly scheduled meetings which members need to sign up for? Are they really just associations of contact records?

If the study groups have a need for online collaboration - you might also investigate the Organic Groups module which integrates w/ CiviCRM groups.
