Multiple Reports from the same Report Template

Can someone explain the relationship between reports built from a template and the template.

I would like to create several reports from the same template, but it seems like I am only able to create one report per template.

E.g., from the Activities Template, I would like to make a report that shows completed activities and another that shows scheduled activities.
