Performance problem
August 10, 2010, 07:21:16 am
Hello,

I'm testing a community website using Drupal and Civicrm (v. 3.1.7). I currently have some serious performance problems with the server taking regularly more than just a few seconds to respond. The site is hosted on a shared server account (bluehost.com) where I can see that the server is constantly throttling the site.

I'm not an IT geek, so I am not sure if it is just normal that civicrm uses that much resources or if something is not as it should be.

There is only one point that might be a cause: I have tried to install localization support, but not supporting trigger, this did obviously not work. However, since I have tried that, the database containes tables for each language (EN, DE, IT and FR). Would this be a cause for the slow speed? And could I do something to speed it up? Can I simply delete the tables of the languages that I can't use since Trigger is not activated?

Thanks a lot for any help.

Simon

in general for most production uses we do not recommend that you run on a shared server. Its definitely worth it to spend at least $20+ and get a better hosting provider. CiviCRM is resource intensive (but then again, i suspect most/all CRM's are)

My database currently counts 10 contacts and nothing else except the standard content and I have about 5 visits per day on that webpage. So I guess there must still be a performance problem.

The problem isn't on civicrm (not as this low level of contacts at least), but more likely your host that isn't good enough.

Database record count, table count and site visit count are just three of several parameters that "weigh down" any host and contribute to making the applications installed upon it slow to respond.

The biggest problem with your choice of shared host model is that shared hosting takes that long list of demands upon the system and multiplies it (by the number of customers hosted upon the shared resources.)

VPS is far better than shared hosting for two reasons:

1) there is only one list of demands per system, meaning you remain effectively in control of application responsivity
2) when you run low on resources (RAM, disk) you can add more with only a credit card, a web form and a reboot
