Renewing will add the normal membership period to the End Date of the previous period for members whose status is Current or Grace. For Expired memberships, renewing will create a membership period commencing from the 'Date Renewal Entered'. This date can be adjusted including being set to the day after the previous End Date - if continuous membership is required.

Does it mean that if the status is "current" whatever you put in the "Date Renewal Entered" is not going to be used ?

I'm confused about that field.
On an active membership, why can we set when the membership has been renewed and where is it visible? Shouldn't it ALWAYS be now() and stored in the activity log  and that's it ? ie. the field shouldn't exist ?

I have a case where the start date has to be set, even if active (during the summer period, the subscription is free and if you renew during the summer, your subscription should start in september).

So I suggest:
1) Date  renewal entered is not a field, is automatically NOW() and stored in the log, or wherever else it's stored
2) A new field Start date is always modifiable, by default is the end day of the last period if active/pending, and NOW() if expired
