Not sure whether to use Contribute or Event for the following scenario:

We have an annual Conference for which we require people to

1. register
2. pay fees

1 - the Registration form includes some custom data particular to the 'event' but not necessarily needed to be kept in the Individual profile (ie. special dietary needs, disabilities etc)

2. we have 2 types of payments; conference fees and membership fees


We can setup registration 2 ways (it seems). We can design a Contribute page to capture all the required info, along with payment options.
We can also set up an Event registration page which also allows for payment.

We'd like to use the 'preferred' method. In other words, how are CiviEvent and CiviContribute meant to work together? Should the Event page have all the required custom data, followed by a Contribute page that only specifies the 6 different fess?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We are using Joomla (v1.0.12) front end with CiviCRM 1.8.11536
