Word replacement feature, what for, where, why, and is 42 really the answer ?
August 14, 2010, 04:53:45 am
Just found this new feature, but they aren't any explanation as for where it's used and what's the purpose.

http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/options/wordreplacements&reset=1

Could someone point me to the doc or explain briefly ?

(no matter what, it'd be good to have one paragraph introducing it at the top of the list)

good question - i was thinking it might be an 'easy' way to sidestep translations ie change Organization to Organisation etc. Gave that a whirl on demo but no change but maybe needs caches clearing

Ha, just tried another change of Events to Meetings and hey presto - it changes in the Admin Menu but not at a deeper level (yet) ie it still says 'New Event' but under the heading 'Meetings'

The intent is as Peter noted "an easy way to translate" selected strings. I hadn't played with it until now. Just tried a few experiments and most things worked as expected. However, I did discover that checking "Exact Match" is not the right thing to do for most situations - since it then only does the replacement if the entire string = the string to be placed.

Example:
Replace "Contribution" with "Donation" - If you check "Exact Match" most instances are not replaced because the strings contain other word / letters (e.g. "New Contribution" is not replaced). Unchecking "Exact Match" produces the desired affect - "New Donation"

One replacement that didn't work for me completely was "Individual" -> "Person". Menu item and quick add block titles changed. The "New Individual" form title didn't. Not sure why.

I'll add some on-screen help to the Word Replacements page for 3.2.2 or so.

It originally came from here http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-5974 and then some emails back and forth. It may have been proposed as a solution to that or a similar issue at the localization sprint.

I tried changing "group" to "channel" (the word 'group' is confusing in our context) but the replacement seems selective.

On the "New Group" form, the menu says "group", the heading says "group", and the text says "channel".

Can I update menus or headings?

It's becoming clear now.

Thanks, Lobo!
