Installing CiviCRM and cPanel File Manager cannot extract zip file
August 18, 2010, 11:22:37 am
I am a first time installer of CiviCRM and I currently have a Joomla site running.  When I follow the Joomla Installation Guide it appears I cannot extract the civicrm-3.2.1-joomla.zip file with my host's (globat) file manager.  I have extracted the file on my computer locally and then uploaded them to the tmp directory, but when I point the installer to this directory

/xxxxx/xxxxxx/xxxxxx/xxxxxx/glo.xxxxx/cancercopay/tmp/com_civicrm/
or
/xxxxx/xxxxx/xxxxxx/xxxxx/glo.xxxxxx/cancercopay/tmp/com_civicrm

(this is where the folder has been extracted to)

it gives me an installation error of "Please enter a package directory."

If this is covered in another location feel free to let me know.  I assume the problem has to do with how the files have been extracted.  If there is a better way to accomplish this let me know.

the error indicates you don't have the right directory
do you see com_civicrm in the tmp directory?
if so, looks like you don't have the correct root directory. ask your hosting provider.

You got me to the point I needed to be.  I was focusing on the problem being related to the way the files were extracted.  Instead it was just as you said.  The directory that Joomla had choose and all setting said was the root directory was not the real location.

To review so I am not the only one that has learned something from this.
I had confirmed the $tmp_path location under help-system information-Configuration File. The Joomla installer by default also fills the file path all the way up to the /tmp directory.  Normal component and plugin installations through joomla work fine.
Correct path listed in control panel system settings.  With new path being used installation was instant.  No more problems faced.
CiviCRM Version: CiviCRM-Joomla-3.2.1 (Alternate version needed because php extract not enabled on server)
Host: Globat
Joomla Version: 1.5.20
Platform Type: Debian
MySQL Version: 5.0.45
Perl Version: 5.8.8
PHP Version:5.2.12
