Secure registration
August 18, 2010, 06:29:17 pm
Hi,

I maintain our church website and I have been asked to look at setting up a registration page for our kids school holiday programs. It is wanted so that the organizers can gauge the number of kids that might be attending and also gather names and contact information, I think that CiviCRM may be what I need. The question that was raised was about the security of the information when the users register, other than buying a ssl certificate and setting up a separate https site is there any protection of the data being passed from the client to the server and in the grand order of things is that really needed for names and addresses? I mean do sites currently using CiviCRM use ssl for the initial registration data or only the payment details?

Thanks
mac

I suspect most orgs only setup SSL when they need to process credit cards directly through the site -- not for basic data handling. Obviously the code seeks to protect the data, and there are security measures to help prevent people from accessing the db directly or through the interface (unless their permissioned to access it). But there's no encryption taking place. As to whether it's needed -- that really depends on your sensitivity to the data and process.

We work with a lot of church organizations and just as lcdweb suggests, we use SSL for all credit card transactions.
