Any Difference Between SMTP and sendmail?

A Drupal / CiviCRM 3.2 site recently switched from SMTP to sendmail and the first test mail went into the tester's junk filter.

Is there any discernible difference on the receiving end if the mail is sent via sendmail as opposed to SMTP?

It very much depends on your server setup; compare the headers of emails sent with both methods and see whether they differ significantly.
