I maybe missing something but...

I am using a profile on an event/contribution page that requires log in.  If a user navigates to event/contribution page prior to login and clicks the login button, the user can not easily navigate back to the event/contribution page after login. 

To work around this, we changed the login link to a popup, but it seems like this or something similar should be base functionality.

yeah, this is an issue with the civicrm/drupal integration. drupal seems to drop all the query parameters that civicrm needs to render the page. not sure when/where/how/why this happens, but if you can trace this and figure out a fix that would be great

There are Drupal modules that people use to deal with this - I think login toboggan may be the favoured one?

How would logintoboggan work in this case?  I haven't used this module, but seems it would work. Do you have an example?
