Hello,

I want all new members of my organization to be automatically subscribed to two newsletters that my organization sends out. The members can unsubscribe if they wish.

What's the best way to handle the automatic subscriptions? Profiles only allow me to add a form submission to a single group. Is there a workaround for adding a form submission to two groups?

Custom fields + smart groups. You can use checkboxes (for example) to let people select more than one interest & build smart groups off them

Can you please verify there are the steps I should take?

1) Add a profile to the bottom of my membership signup form with two checkboxes, one for each newsletter. Each box is checked by default, but can be unchecked by the member.

2) Build two smartgroups that key off the values of the checkboxes. The smartgroups are mailing lists (my two newsletters).

Question: if a member chooses to unsubscribe from a newsletter down the road, can a smartgroup handle that?

Yes, that is correct. And yes, smartgroups can handle unsubscribes. In addition to the smart group criteria Civi records manual additions & deletions WRT smart groups

One more question: what's the best way to handle the current subscribers (members of a regular group)? I would like to merge the current group together with the new smartgroup somehow.

Do a search for your Current Group - then add them to the Smart Group (you may need to do this from the Smart Group - add Members option)
