Replacing Date Picker with Plain Text?
August 24, 2010, 08:15:55 am
I know this issue was recently brought up here, but that thread is specific to birthdays.  I'm wondering if there is a way to completely replace the Date Picker on all forms with just a plain text field that is validated on form submission?  Or some combination that allows the user to type inside the date field (even with a date picker in place).

On most other applications we use (jasper, drupal, etc), the date picker allows text entry (the picker just populates the text field for the user if they choose to use it).  This makes life much easier during data entry.  Not to be a pain, but the date picker we currently have in civi just seems to get in the way of quick data entry (I'm sure others have complained enough about it already, sorry).

Does anyone know of a hook we can put into place to just replace all date fields to use a different date picker or just be plain text?  Or is there some patch for all dates in general (not just the birthdate) we could use?  Our users would really appreciate it!  Thanks.

gregory heller and civicactions have indicated that this is a serious enough issue for them that they might submit a patch. so hopefully it happens for the next release or so

for the time being adding we have added help text

"Having trouble with the date-of-birth calendar?  Be sure to choose the (1) month, (2) year and (3) date in that order.  Do NOT use AOL.  We recommend the latest version of Firefox or Internet Explorer."

I know this is now an old topic, looks like the new date picker works realle well for Firefox and Chrome, (I used to also tell my users to use year, month, day sequence) but for some reason now all my IE users CANNOT pick a date at all, or enter one manually.
