No words of wisdom straight out...but what Joomla version? Latest stable 1.0.13 or latest dev 1.5 RC3? Also what rev CiviCRM? Might help others answer you.

I occasionally have problems where I get kicked back to the Joomla login screen while working in CiviCRM. I find this happens more often when using a 1.0.13 installation than a 1.5RC3 installation. Which leads me to think that it probably has to do with session handling, as that has changed significantly between the two versions. I also find it will often happen if I have multiple tabs open with CiviCRM screens -- again, likely because the session handling gets confused if I've got several things going on simultaneously.

Try increasing the the site and admin session lifetime in Joomla (global config > server tab). Maybe test the different session authentication settings. You might also try adding the code hack described here for session handling: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Configuring+Front-end+Profile+Listings+and+Forms+in+Joomla%21+Sites. While it's necessary for exposing CiviCRM pages to the frontend, it may have some impact on viewing CiviCRM in the backend (pure speculation here).
