Categorizing Groups
August 29, 2010, 08:07:19 am
I am setting up a new CiviCRM deployment, and part of the deployment will include around 20 mailing lists, all of which will be self service mode, meaning that the people using the site will be able to subscribe or unsubscribe from any of the lists whenever they want.

I am trying to figure out the best way of doing this, which is why I am asking you guys, here are my thoughts:

Option 1:
Create Individual custom data set with check boxes for each mailing list, then create smart mailing lists for each check box.

Option 2:
Create a tag set for people, and create smart lists from there.

what exactly does the "group" custom data set do? I see it appear when I am creating groups, but can't seem to get to it from anywhere else, is there a way to insert this information into a form to automatically assign people to groups?

 thanks

B.

Why don't you expose the groups on a profile and let the user choose directly ?

I have never done that before, and am not exactly sure how I would do that. I tried creating a profile with just email and group (s), and the groups don't seem to appear.

Try this chapter in the book (i googled: floss civicrm newsletter group public)
http://en.flossmanuals.net/CiviCRM/GroupsAndTags
Visibility determines permissions for joining and removing contacts from groups. Select "User and User Admin Only" if membership in this group is controlled only by authorised CiviCRM users. Select "Public Pages" if you want to allow contacts to join and remove themselves from this group via Registration and Account Profile forms.
