Using contact types and organization type together

Some times I can define a profile that's using fields from both contact and organization and some times I can't. What are the rules?

You could use a profile with fields that are common (Contact) and any one of the other types (Individual, Organization or Household).
However any combination of the contact types is NOT allowed. eg a combination of Individual and Organization fields and likewise in a profile is not allowed.
