Selecting a group in a profile
September 06, 2010, 05:11:03 am
Hi,

I am new to CiviCRM, and I have been learning about profiles. I have a profile set up to enter new members, which I am pretty happy with, but I cant work something out.
I want to be able to select the group to add the member to in the form. I added the Contact - Group(s) field, but it doesnt display at all in the profile when I preview it.
I would really like to be able to select the group, preferably from a drop down box, in the input form. Am I on the right track using the field Contact field? How do I get it to work the way I need it to?

Thanks

Dave Greenberg

Yes, including the "Group(s)" field in a profile will results in a set of checkboxes for folks to select one or more groups to join. You can see an example on the demo (if you check before the DB is reset):

http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/profile/create?gid=1&reset=1

A few things to watch for:
- You need to include an Email address field in the Profile (unless you've disabled Double Optin in your settings file). You should have gotten a warning if you tried to add the Group(s) field to your profile w/o having an Email address field.
- Only Groups  with Visibility setting = Public Pages will be included on the profile form

Thanks for your reply.
I should have mentioned I am running CiviCRM on Joomla.

I can see what you mean about the groups, and can see the setup I want in the system generated Contacts edit form, but I cant get it to appear inthe profile I set up.

The "setup" for the profile fields is the same regardless of whether you're using Joomla or Drupal. You'll need to clarify what you've done, what you're seeing when you Preview the profile, etc.

If you haven't spent some time reading "Understanding CiviCRM" - I'd recommend doing so to get more comfortable w/ concepts etc.
