Dear All,

I'm having some trouble with the CiviCRM email functions.  I originally had the outbound mail set to the mail() option but then it appeared that emails going to whole mailing lists were not sending, so I plugged in my SMTP settings.  That was also giving my issues, so I returned to mail() as my outbound mail option and CiviMail to mailing lists seems to be sending okay, but now on forms and contribition/event registration pages, I am getting this error message:

An error occurred when CiviCRM attempted to send an email (via SMTP). If you received this error after submitting on online contribution or event registration - the transaction was completed, but we were unable to send the email receipt.

The mail library returned the following error message:
mail() returned failure

This is probably related to a problem in your Outbound Email Settings (Administer CiviCRM » Global Settings » Outbound Email), OR the FROM email address specifically configured for your contribution page or event. Possible causes are:

    Your Sendmail path is incorrect.
    Your Sendmail argument is incorrect.
    The FROM Email Address configured for this feature may not be a valid sender based on your email service provider rules.

I went back and made sure the SMTP settings I'd entered were deleted and that mail() was selected, but the error continues.  Any ideas how to fix?

Never mind -- it seems to have sorted itself out somehow!

Actually, ugh, this problem has returned.  I was receiving this error earlier in the day and then it righted itself, but now it's back.  Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?  My sendmail is set to mail() and I don't have any SMTP settings filled in.

if i had to guess it has something to do with your hosting provider and the mail services they provide. might want to chat with them
