CiviCRM Profiles/Custom Data View Problems

I'm using A CiviCRM profile and Custom Data for a series of events hosted on one of my clients' sites.  It's Civi 3.1.6 and basically what is happening is that the profile and data show up on the front end registration form for the event and they show up when you export participants for the event, but they show as blank whenever you view the participant information inside CiviCRM and in the confirmation email that goes to the participant when they register.

What could be causing that?

Has no one else seen this happen before?  Where the receipts and notices in the back end of Civi show nothing, but exports show all the correct custom data?
