Our system seems to be adding a duplicate membership to those members who are using the CiviContribute to pay their membership fees. The names and email are identical. Isn't there a filter for this? Sorry if I am not being clear here.

You'll need to describe the "flow" in detail to get feedback on this. Are these contacts with existing memberships? Are they "users"? Are they logging in prior to filling in the CiviContribute form? Are you seeing duplicate contact records, each with a membership - or duplicate memberships of the same type for a single contact? What version of CiviCRM are you using?

Sorry for not giving all this before:

1. These are existing contacts. And by that I mean they have a CiviMember file (not necessarily a user file).
2. Not necessarily users. We try and sync users daily.
3. The duplicate contact record, each with a membership.
4. CiviCRM 1.8.11536
