Is it possible to add custom data fields to System workflow messages?

I have a few customer data fields on contributions.  I'd like those data fields to be included in the system generated letter  "Contributions - Receipt (off-line)

Whenever I have the debug line {debug output="html"} in the message along with an inline data set, the message is never generated so I can't see if the custom data field is included or not.  (That's a bug, that I will put into issue tracker)

For now, can someone tell me if those custom data fields are available in the system generated letters and if so, how I should reference them?

Have you tried inserting the tokens from the ‘Insert Tokens’ pop-up? It seems to show contact custom data, and inserts tokens that look like {contact.custom_2}
