An update - during last CiviCon in San Francisco (April 2012), a decision to go ahead with proper Extensions Directory was made. Extensions Directory will be a place where all CiviCRM-native extensions as well as CMS-native extensions (Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress modules) will be submitted for CiviCRM community to find them and use them.

In addition to that, an automated way to pull CiviCRM-native extensions into CiviCRM distributions is being worked on so that approved extensions are available to be enabled directly from your CiviCRM installations.
