CiviEvents + Joomla + Calendar?
September 14, 2010, 07:22:00 am
I see a lot of discussion around how well you can integrate CiviEvents with Drupal using iCal.  I don't see any good posts on weather this is possible with a component that is native to Joomla.  I do have the CiviEvent module, but it is really restrictive and doesn't provide anything close to a calendar view of the events loaded.

Can someone point me in the right direction?  Maintaining two systems (civiEvents and a event calendar component) is a deal-breaker for us.

Thanks!
Curtis

might want to do a search using: http://civicrm.org/civisearch

on civicrm and joomla calendar

there are some prior posts on this

Also might want to consider contributing / sponsoring a developer to help fix the deal breaker and improve the code base :)

I don't know if you could revive/fix this orphaned Joomla extension, which looks as if it was trying to produce calendars from iCal feeds?

Thank you for your replies.  We attempted to use GCalendar to pull the iCal feed that CiviEvents produces.  However, we quickly realized that CiviEvents is now the weak point.  Basically, we need users to register people and cars, then link those to an event that is ala-cart (multiple activities, each having it's own price).

We are kind of confused that the majority of CiviCRM is so flexible/configurable, yet CiviEvents is so restrictive.  Hopefully this is helpful as constructive critisism.

Lobo,

I am interested in this but would need to know what the financial commitment would be and how long it would take.

I would then use a an actual CiviEvent from my company to raise the money to get this paid for, as well as funds from my own company.

Need a ball park cost.

We are working on 3 projects right now that come 2nd Qtr 2011, this is going to be something required.

Best,

D

Civi publishes an iCal feed for events, which is the best opportunity for integrating with another extension.
for example, i've used jcal pro -- which will consume an ical feed -- to publish visual calendar displays. jevents, zap calendar, and others provide similar ical support. the notable weakness is that i don't believe any of them have a way to easily keep the calendar synchronized -- you must trigger the update from the ical feed manually.

but they are definitely viable options. you don't need to recreate your events in the calendar -- just trigger an update periodically using the ical feed and the calendar will display your latest civi events.
