leads, opportunities

To me, "leads" and "opportunities" are an essential part of CRM. I haven't found them in CiviCRM, yet. Did I miss them because I didn't spend enough time exploring CiviCRM, or doesn't CiviCRM have them?

CiviCRM doesn't have them. The idea behind it is that it's built for nonprofit organisations, and those phenomenons are not a part of most commong NP workflows.

Thx,

Hmm. We are a not for profit organization, but we do have leads and opportunities. When we organize a conference the "leads" are the people who have shown an interest but haven't registered yet, and the "opportunities" are potential fits between people we think should know one another. We'll think of something. Thanks for the prompt reply.

You can easily model these attributes w/ "Tags" or "Groups" or custom fields +  smart groups (saved searches).

Exactly how I feel, what's a CRM without leads?  My project is also for a non-profit and this is a huge part of their needs.

Can you pls spell out how you would envisage 'leads' and 'opportunities' function in civicrm since you don't comment on dave's suggestion re using Tags and Groups?

Absolutely happy to be proven wrong - might be a good opportunity to sketch it out on the wiki and start a Make it Happen campaign. :-)

Hi,

leads and opportunities are "simply" a way of segmenting the base of contacts & activities, no ?

By using the status on activities and tags or contact sub type (eg a lead as a subtype of Individual), you should cover your need.

Sounds like semantics to me.  It's tagging.  CiviCRM lets you call them anything you want, see Dave's response.

How about Opportunities as major donations? I know that some NPOs use that terminology.  Would you handle that in CiviGrant or elsewhere?

Grant is to give money, not to raise it.

We either use activity and campaigns for fundraising, or if the process is complex, we use case)

We implemented leads like this ...
  • Created custom data fields that sit on a separate tab on the Contact screen
  • We have 4 strategies we use to reach people and a number of options for each strategy (eg, a number of course options for Training)
  • For each strategy (and for fundraising) we have 2 fields
  • The first is a flag ('Potential' meaning a lead, and 'Don't' meaning don't ask)
  • The second is a selection of options for which the person is a lead
  • There is a comment field so people can add information about the lead

Usually the lead is set manually (eg, if a person expresses an interest in training, we set the Training flag to 'Potential' and the Training Option to the appropriate course).

We can set the leads by searching for contacts and using the Bulk Update Via Profile action.

We set this up before CiviCampaign came on the scene. CiviCampaign is the "CiviCRM way" for coordinating action. Depending on how that develops we'll end up using that somehow. The gap in the CiviCampaign function set is reporting on what activities etc are part of a campaign.
