Any meaning to "bounce type" and "bounce reason"?
November 14, 2007, 07:55:18 pm
I see these bounce types in a CiviMail report -- "invalid" and "unknown".  Is there any difference?

Similarly is there any intelligence to be gained from "bounce reason" other than that different servers produce slightly different messages on a bounce?  There are many varieties, such as:

not our customer
No such recipient
User unknown
Delivery to the following recipients failed
MAILBOX NOT FOUND
not a valid user

Etc., etc.

Thanks.

If you’ll look into the civicrm_mailing_bounce_type table, you’ll see that the ‘invalid’ bounce type means the email address is not valid. ‘Unknown’ are the bounces that weren’t matched to any rule provided in civicrm_mailing_bounce_pattern (do feel free to add your own rules or, better yet, send them our way so we can include them in the future).

When I look at the contents of civicrm_mailing_bounce_type, the different types indicated there make sense to me; it’s one thing then an address is invalid, another when the recipient’s inbox is full (so he’ll be able to get email later), and yet another when there’s a routing error (so he can’t even guess he’s not getting anything).
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.
