Alternatives to BIRT

BIRT is an Eclipse-based open source reporting system for web applications, especially those based on Java and J2EE.
Perhaps alternative reporting options from BIRT need to be discussed?  What id BIRT do that requires Java and J2EE - interactive query builders?

Some folks have successfully used Crystal Reports - however we haven't focused on creating sample for that platform since it is not open source. Since at this point the level of "integration" is simply that the report generator application interfaces with the CiviCRM database - you could potentially use any reporting tool that can get it's data from a MySQL database.

If you have success building reports with a tool that is simpler to install / has fewer platform requirements, please share your findings and report samples with the community.

Perhaps we could provide some benefit by sharing php scripts that we each develop and to query and output information.  Not an end-user tool, but could save a lot of time when we have similar examples to start with.  Certain standard scripts could be useful to a number of people.

I'm not suggesting a special effort, just when things are developed, perhaps we could share nifty approaches and examples may already exist.

Thanks for the reply.
