Use events or activities to track attendance

Is there a simpler way to use civicrm to track attendance at public meetings?

I was hoping for a very simple interface that allows one to view a list of members then just check a box to say they were at a meeting.

I envision a process like this:

Step 1.  Select event type: (e.g. club meeting or church worship service)
Step 2.  Select date/time: calendar module
Step 3.  View a long list of all contacts with a check box next to their name to indicate they were or were not at the event or activity.

I'm not looking for any kind of on-line registration. I just want to be able to take an attendance list from paper and quickly enter it into civicrm for tracking purposes.

Currently it is tedious to perfom this task. Maybe I just don't know how to do it.

I'm also interested in this.

It seems like it'd be pretty simple...mostly just adding a different method of adding participants.  A list of checkboxes listing out contacts in the system.

Can you clarify what Find Contacts (or Advanced Search) then Actions > Add Contacts to Event

fails to do in terms of what you are trying to achieve.
