Allowing signup to different Joomla User Groups

Hi,

We're running CiviCRM 3.2.beta5 and Joomla 1.5.x.

Is it possible, when requesting a contributor to create an account, to allow them to sign up in a Joomla user group OTHER than the default?  For example if we have a special user level?

Would this require core code modification?
