Upgrading from 2.0.3 to 3.2.3
September 26, 2010, 01:16:02 pm
I'm attempting to migrate an existing install of civicrm 2.0.3 to 3.2.3 on another server.  The old install has a number of members, donation forms and other custom configuration.  I did not set it up so I don't know exactly what may have been configured.   I'm wondering if someone more familiar with civicrm has any suggestions for the best way to go about this.  I thought about creating a perl script or just doing a mysqldump to pull the records out of the old database and insert them into the new, but I don't know the schema well enough and how its changed from version 2.0.3 to 3.2.3 to know the feasibility of this.  The other consideration is that I'm taking the records from a standalone setup and importing them into a multi-org setup and I'm not sure what I'd have to do to account for that.   Any suggestions GREATLY appreciated!

@devfloppy,

In my experience, the upgrade scripts are very reliable, and failures are well discussed on these forums.

Have you got a test machine? Try setting up from a backup and performing the upgrade process at http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC32/Upgrade+Drupal+Sites+to+3.2

Note that you have to upgrade from 2.0 to 2.2 before upgrading from 2.2 to 3.2

@devfloppy,

I have no experience with multi-org, but my waters tell me that it would be best to do that after the upgrade to 3.2. I've looked through the multi-org posts on this forum, and those folks seem to have a bunch of issues,

Ken is right - do your upgrade first. Also, multi-org can mean more than one thing. Do you mean multi-org in the sense of several drupal sites accessing one db.

2.0.1 is old enough  to have a ffew integrity problems so it may be worth doing an integrity check - search for dharmatech's db_tools module.

Thanks so much for the info.  I think the upgrade path makes sense, but I'm not sure about one thing.  Currently this site is hosted such that its using its own drupal and civicrm install.  The new host is using a shared hosting setup so that in theory CiviCRM module would be shared by several independent drupal sites.  This is the first one that I'm importing so other than knowing about civicrm_domains, I'm not sure how the data is stored so that each drupal site has its own data available only to itself and not to everyone else.

Red flag... You do realize that Civi 2.0.x worked with Drupal 5.x and all versions of Civi higher than 2.0.x REQUIRE Drupal 6.x... ja?

Not only will you need to upgrade Civi, you will FIRST need to upgrade your Drupal site to 6.x. Then once that is successfully completed... MAKE A BACKUP and begin the various Civi upgrades required.

I started out at 2.0.7, then moved to 2.1.6, then to 2.2.9, and finally to a customized 3.2.1 build. "Lots of work..."
