Overkill for small organizations? philanthropic community group

I am in the process of converting two sites to Drupal.  I was just listening to Dave Greenberg on Drupal Voices and realized CiviCRM might be just the ticket for both sites.  But they're both small projects and I don't know if the juice would be worth the squeeze. I'm going to send this in two messages because they're different.

Project 1 is a 500-member philanthropic organization where members respond to immediate needs in the community that fall through the cracks of social service organizations.  Requests are sent out via email.  For example, a recently homeless mom of three needs kitchen equipment, a dresser, and two twin mattresses.  An email goes out to members.  Members who respond take the items to a central location.

We don't keep track of much more than name, email, and phone number.  Dues are $10/year and voluntary.  We have two meetings a year.  So we need a way to send the emails, a place to put the requests online so people can see them, a way to enroll or renew members, and a way for people to pay dues.

I'm not far along on this project yet.  We do such a small amount of member tracking that I'm not sure it makes sense to use CiviCRM, but maybe we could treat the requests sort of like events and that would work.

What do you think?

The membership tracking should be pretty straightforward using CiviMember.

For the "requests" - one approach would be to use and online contribution page where you update the "Description" section frequently to list the current requests. You can set it up as a non-monetary page - and just have a single custom free-text field where "donors" can type in the request item(s) they are committing to donate.  I think that might be a better model than an event. If you need a way to more precisely much needs with in-kind donations - then you'll need to do some custom coding to extend the contribution page processing.
