Overkill? Yoga school
September 27, 2010, 09:32:19 am
I'm trying to determine if CiviCRM is overkill for my two Drupal conversions from non-CMS websites.

Project 2 is a yoga school that has five class sessions a year. This project is almost done, but the scheduling and PayPal registration parts feel like I'm building them pixel by pixel.

The school database lives offline on the school owner's computer.  Right now they export from FileMakerPro and import into a MySQL database, which populates only the school schedule.  It's very clunky.  The schedule is the only thing that's currently dynamic.

I'd also like to get the student tables online and linked to which classes they're taking.

Is anyone else using CiviCRM for a little school like this?  Does it make sense to start with it even though I'm pretty far along in the project?

Thanks.

FrTommy

There's a module called CiviSchool, that might be of use to you.

I personally think CiviCRM would work well in helping to automate and keep track of things for the school. While certainly there will be features that you might not need like Grants that can be disabled and the value of using the software will far outweigh any extra features you don't use.

Hi Molly

I do think CiviCRM can be a really good fit for a small organisation, and don't think it is overkill per se.

I provided some support work for a yoga school that is using civicrm. they use it for their events, obviously.

You haven't really explained how the 'scheduling' needs to work at the front end, and whether you are needing to eg record if someone attends only 18 of 20 weeks of a class etc.

I really don't think civischool will have any relevance to your situation since the extensions that provides are aimed, in part, at helping sort out parent/teacher meetings etc.

If you want to email me I can probably provide links to the yoga site in case it is worth taking a look over.

I am considering CiviCRM for our studio as we move from a static page site too. We have about 16 classes a week and anywhere between 2 - 7 people per class. I am also looking to heavily automate much of our studio's processes including class and event scheduling, class package purchasing and tracking, sending newsletters, and accepting donations for our charity work, and much, much more.

I am thinking so far that CiviCRM is going to be a great fit, but I am a bit afraid of starting. It is such a massive beast.

I have a new cloud hosted account over on VPS.net and I have started with a D7 install.

petednz, I would love a link to the Yoga site you are working with.

To mollyavalon and FreeXenon, CiviCRM does sound like a good fit. I have clients using it for event registrations quite similar to what it sounds like you are doing.

Not sure that school we mentored will add much to your knowledge to be honest but I will ask them to get in touch with you if I can dig out the contact. Googling yoga and civicrm shows a bunch of sites using civicrm for yoga bookings.

Hello mollyavalon,

I don't think that Civi would be overkill at all. Setting up your classes with CiviEvent would help you keep track of attendees, and also allows you to keep track of payments. Civi is used for a very broad range of organizations, large and small. If it will help you out, I say go for it.

Cheers,
Jason

The biggest issue you might face is the lack of recurring events in CiviEvent, so if they do not want to treat the classes as a single event, everyone has to be created by hand.

Other than that, it can fulfill a studio's needs.

I'd agree with most of the above - Civi can be a great tool for a small org and not overkill at all if there's someone who knows how to use it.

If recurring events would be useful and it probably will, then consider contributing to http://civicrm.org/content/make-it-happen#recurevent
