How do I display a home page for CiviCRM on Joomla!
September 27, 2010, 11:02:51 pm
I am sure that the answer that I need will sound very elementary (and is?) but this is my first
installation of CiviCRM. It is being done for a friend who has also been in IT for years but not as
experienced in Joomla! as the modest level I understand.

When person installs Joomla!, it takes you to the home page with a successful install. To get the
the administration effort, we are told that you have to add "/administrator" (ie. a deliberate action
to get there. Our experience in installing CiviCRM on Joomla! shows that instead, the install ends
with placing the installer into the administration page instead.

Both of us agree that it makes no sense that this should be the address to which users should be
sent. Obviously they should be lead to a "home page" for CiviCRM. There is a large and complex
set of parameters that can and need to be set for a new CiviCRM application. That may be a lot
of work but an understandable cost for such versatility. it doesn't bother me.

What we are so stuck on is simply ------ After any degree of customization via the administration
page, how do we publish the results so the show? What should the home page URL be? This is
not a stand alone version, so I'll guess this can be made to show in Joomla! front page.
       HOW DO WE DO THAT??

..... Simple, I am  sure, but we are totally stuck until we are told what to do.

With thanks in advance,

Hi Bill,

I don't appreciate being interrupted and yelled at on the phone because your forum post wasn't answered within a day.

I would suggest you review some Getting Started documentation on the wiki and in Understanding CiviCRM. You might benefit from going to joomla.demo.civicrm.org and looking around. I think your concerns about the install process are more about how Joomla! installs all components than about CiviCRM in particular, but I am not familiar enough with Joomla! to know.

It's unclear from your message what you were hoping to expose to Joomla! users. Setting up profiles for user signup fields is done differently than setting up Contribution pages and Event Registration pages.

The Configuration Checklist is a good place for you to start. I'm unclear what the difficulty was for you. To see get to it, login in to the administrator interface on your Joomla! installation (http://mysite.org/administrator/index.php?option=com_login), then go to Components > CiviCRM, then click on the CiviCRM menu to Administer > Configure > Configuration Checklist.

With respect to changing the front page for users to a CiviCRM page, I would guess (though I am not a Joomla! user) that you should look at changing something in Joomla! rather than in CiviCRM.

I am sorry that you are frustrated and understand that you would like support without having to pay anything. Politeness in asking for a favour rather than demands for immediate attention go a long way. In addition, an indication of the places you have looked for help, and a specific request make it more likely that you will find people interested in helping you out. Less SHOUTING also helps.

Best wishes in learning how to contribute to and benefit from open source communities,

Joe

Perhaps you're not clear on which "users" of CiviCRM can see it. Contacts (customers, charity donors, event attendees, whatever) can do a certain amount via exposed profiles (linked as joomla links) or contribution/event pages (again, via a joomla menu item). They also get a "dashboard" (if logged in to Joomla on an account that is linked to a contact). They can also do some searching (depending how you configure it) on other contacts. There is no "homepage" as such for them. Use a normal Joomla content page and then dump them into the relevant menu link (and use modules anywhere type extensions if you must).

But that's it. If you want one contact to be able to properly search, edit, deal with or adjust other contact(s) or report(s), they have to be a Joomla administrator and log in to the administration menu. So your charity staff, club volunteers, whoever must be joomla back end users. Now, if you think that's a huge security issue since Joomla has rubbish access control and CiviCRM has no ACL in Joomla - you're right. If you think that's not great because Joomla backend is cluttered and difficult for a novice - right again. But blame joomla (mostly). Maybe it'll be better in Joomla 1.6....
