Selected records only not working in custom search

I created a couple of custom searches (as per http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,15703.0.html). These have been created using the "Group.php" and "Sample.tpl" templates. No rocket science... If I select a few records from the search results, check the "Selected records only" checkbox and then "Export Contacts", it exports the entire list of the search results, not just the selected ones!

If I select "Mailing labels", then it prints only the selected contacts! What am I missing here in the export to csv?

Tried searching forums and google and drew a blank....

I'm running CiviCRM 3.1.4.

there might have been a bug/issue with that in versions of 3.1.x

can you upgrade to 3.1.6 and see if it works there or better yet upgrade to 3.2.3
