Bad header
October 01, 2010, 10:13:01 am
I'm trying to send a test mail on a mailing and I'm getting a 500 internal server error.  When I check the error logs I see:
Quote
[Fri Oct  1 10:22:20 2010] [error] [client <client IP>] malformed header from script. Bad header=b.12.30.d12ccb8883358828@... H: /<path omitted>/cgi-bin/php-cgi
[Fri Oct  1 10:22:37 2010] [error] [client <client IP>] malformed header from script. Bad header=b.13.31.756060cd73b4dbb1@... H: /<path omitted>/cgi-bin/php-cgi
[Fri Oct  1 10:23:26 2010] [error] [client <client IP>] malformed header from script. Bad header=b.14.32.112313d6cf53e711@... H: /<path omitted>/cgi-bin/php-cgi
[Fri Oct  1 10:23:33 2010] [error] [client <client IP>] malformed header from script. Bad header=b.15.33.b9f4fce73f311655@... H: /<path omitted>/cgi-bin/php-cgi
[Fri Oct  1 12:50:02 2010] [error] [client <client IP>] malformed header from script. Bad header=b.16.34.5148392e8941ffb9@... H: /<path omitted>/cgi-bin/php-cgi

Any ideas what would cause this?  All this was working as of a few days ago and it hasn't been messed with.

EDIT:  It seems the test message actually went through.  But instead of proceeding with creating the mailing I got the 500 internal server error.

Hi,

I'd likely one of the configuration step isn't complete in your install:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/CiviCRM/SystemConfiguration

This being said, you seem to be using windows, civiMail is mostly (only?) used under linux in production, so might get a specific MS issue.

It's a fairly standard LAMP setup.  So no, not windows.

Additionally, it USED to work...the error message started happening out of the blue.

Then I have no idea what this "H:" is on linux (and php in fcgi works fine, that's how I use it, but the standard LAMP is using mod_php, not cgi)

H: /<path omitted>/cgi-bin/php-cgi

Let us know it you find a solution

This is a hosted server so I can't be certain.  I've seen H on linux mapped to home before though.

the <path omitted> part was replaced by me just like I edited in "<Client IP>".

Any idea what the "b.15.33.b9f4fce73f311655@" part of the bad header is?

Err,

That's the email format for catching bounces.

Between you withdrawing information, the log truncating info, rather unconventional mappings of letter drives or so it seems, I'd suggest you hire a professional you trust and give full details and access to let fix it.

Alternatively, go back to the chapter I gave you earlier and go through it step by step, whatever change happened on your configuration it is likely to have uncovered a previously undetected configuration.

Good luck

[Mon Oct 11 16:42:18 2010] [error] [client 24.113.118.136] malformed header from script. Bad header=b.24.44.37349d9fb1f2ad2d@... H: /hsphere/local/home/inspro/insprofessional.com/cgi-bin/php-cgi

because the full path to my client's home dir and my ip gives you so much better info to work with...

EDIT:
To be clear, it sends the email correctly. The problem is that in the browser I get a 500 server error after sending the test email.  The email method I'm using is SendMail.  The email sends the following:

It doesn't have the domain name set up properly for the return/bounce email
Configure your return channel properly (more info there:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/CiviCRM/SystemConfiguration

And I'd suggest you to use php mail() instead of sendmail (but you still have to fix your return channel)

That appears to have done it, thanks.

And mail() doesn't appear to be an option on 3.2...at least it's not there for me.  All I have is smtp, sendmail, or disable.

Might have been introduced in a later version of 3.2.x

btw, update your profile, you're listed as 2.2
