I have just started using civi today. The first set of data I imported did not work properly so I deleted all the contacts and ran the import again. However the set of data was refused as the original external identifier was still in the database and my imported data was recognised as duplicate as it has the same identifiers. I can see the external identifier at the base of the screen but how can I delete the external identifiers that no longer have records attached to them?

Did you delete all your contacts or are they still in trash? (You can find it with Advanced search and then tick the box for deleted contacts?)

I used Advanced search and the records are in there. If I permanently delete them, will civi then no longer recognise the external identifier?

and what you need to test anyway before other options come into play!
