existing member not logged in gets DB error when renewing w/same email

I guess the subject line says it all. When I tested a membership contribution page using the email address that was already in the DB for a member (me), submitting the form gave me a DB error saying the email already existed.

It seems to me the more appropriate behavior would be for the membership to simply be posted to the appropriate record based on email. (Isn't this how contributions work?)  Not all members will remember to log in.

(The processor is PayPal standard, FWIW.)

Any thoughts?
