Search by group results not all appearing (bug)
October 08, 2010, 04:19:30 am
Hi guys, not sure if this is correct forum for this, but here goes...

I recently observed some strange behaviour from my search results after upgrading to 3.2.3. They problem may have been there before the upgrade but we only noticed it after. When searching for members of a group using advanced search, we noticed that the total number of people found was not matching the results displayed. This seems to be a problem on the sandbox demo site as well.

At first I thought the total was being calculated incorrectly, but using the alphabetical pager in the search results showed certain contacts in the group that were not listed in the search results. E.g. clicking on 'W' in the alphabetical pager, brought up several contacts correctly in the group whose surnames start with 'W', but who were not in the main search results or under 'All' in the alphabetical pager. Then trying changing the number of search results per page, I found out that despite finding 100 contacts in the group, and being set to show 50 per page, civiCRM was only showing 38 in my search results per page. Changing to 100 results per page, it only displayed around 60-70?

Thinking this may be just our installation, I did some tests on the demo site and lo and behold found similar inconsistencies.
If you do an advanced search here:
http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/contact/search/advanced&reset=1

just selecting 'Newsletter subscribers' group as the only criteria, or go under manage group contacts for that group here:
http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/group/search?reset=1&force=1&context=smog&gid=2

you see it says there are 21 members listed as 'added', but only 10 appear in the list. Is this the intended behaviour or is it a bug? Certainly our users find it confusing because the initial list here is not limited to the first letter in the alphabetical pager (A), and the implication from the search is that all the people in the group should be listed here, so that you can do stuff with them.

Whats the verdict. Bug, or am I doing something wrong?

Hi Graham - when I follow the two links you supply i see only 10 of the 22 contacts listed as members of the group on both links

When I use search builder i see all 22.

In both of the former cases i see everyone alphabetically to Parker, Amar.

IN search builder i see another 12 from Parker, Milan to Yadav, Justin

So if in Adv Search I click on Y I then see Yadav

If I click back on All i see only 12.

If I click to resort the Name column i then see 16 from Yadav to Jones, Peter

Weird :P

I've experienced some of this same weirdness (and I'm on 3.2) but figured since I was so new to CiviCRM that I must be doing something wrong :-)

Graham, Peter, Tim,

I think issue http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-6355 covers this,

Thanks Ken. Got that to look forward to in the 3.4 release of CiviCRM.

dave j's recipe for creating the problem sounds way more complex than what graham reported so not sure it will be same problemo

I just posted a new topic (sorry for not reading the new posts!) beacuse I've experienced the same problem, but I'm using 3.1.6 and performing an 'advanced search' based on contribution dates and types. See http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,16127.0.html
